Shepcon QLD 3rd Year Anniversary
We celebrate Christmas and another successful year at Shepcon QLD. We continue to be the low maintenance concrete contractor offering smart solutions to the concrete construction industry in Queensland.
This year Shepcon reached its business plan goal of a $12 Million turnover. This was achieved in just under 3 years and is a testament to our team, our clients and the leadership provided by Andrew and Adrian. Our network of loyal and supportive trade suppliers and subcontractors has grown with us and we now have capacity to supply concrete and reinforcement across major projects.
2018 will see Shepcon focusing on improvements in productivity and quality rather than turnover growth. We will continue to price projects and scopes that suit Shepcon’s competencies.
Projects
Our people have worked 145,000 hours over 26 separate projects in 2017. Work at Amberley has continued to be our major focus with Shepcon undertaking more complex projects with extended scopes including full structural supply packages.
Shepcon continues to have a passion for delivering high end industrial floors. We have the capacity and plant to be working on two industrial floor projects at the same time. This year has seen both Shepcon Laser Screeds working simultaneously across two projects. We are now an approved Bunnings concrete placement contractor and have successfully completed a Bunnings store. We have completed our first Aircraft pavement project utilising Somero’s latest 3D profiler and Allen’s triple roller paver.
If it’s a warehouse, school, high rise, aircraft pavement, hard stand, commercial building, retail floor, roadway, machine footing, hanger, carpark – Shepcon has the people, plant and experience to deliver the project.
Innovation
Shepcon QLD continues to offer our clients experience, innovation and smart solutions setting a new benchmark in the concrete construction industry. Smart digital devices are standard across all our job sites. Our employees clock in and out on their phones and do not know what a paper timesheet is! Our smart device ITP’s have set a new benchmark for quality assurance in the industry and we are embracing the digital job site.
Shepcon upgraded our outdated Somero 3D profiler to the latest Trimble technology. This was a massive investment for Shepcon and we have used the system successfully of MRTS road pavements, Aircraft pavements and hardstand pavements. In partnership with a QLD Civil Contractor, Shepcon has completed an aircraft pavement project utilizing Allen’s triple roller paver imported from the USA.
Training and Development in our Industry
We continue to offer opportunities to younger industry entrants. We have brought down the average age of our workforce to below 40 years, however it is still too high and we acknowledge a responsibility to develop and train the next generation of workers in our industry.
Shepcon has 4 registered trainees with some completing their traineeship this year. We have employed a number of younger industry entrants across our sites. There is still more work for us to do and we thank our workforce for taking these younger industry entrants under their wings and developing their knowledge and skills in our industry.
Shepcon is proud to be sending one of our supervisors to the World of Concrete in Las Vegas in January next year for advanced industry training. We plan to continue this initiative offering supervisors an opportunity to attend the World of Concrete and advance their knowledge in the industry in years to come.
People
Shepcon directors continue to invest time in leadership coaching and mentoring that assist us viewing the business from “outside in” approach guiding decision making and setting good strategy for Shepcon going forward.
Training and mentorship opportunities continue in the office with the employment of two graduates for estimating, contracts administration and project engineering. We continue to support a key employee complete his Civil Engineering degree at QUT on a part time basis.
Shepcon has hit our target work cover premium at below 4%. We are sitting at 65% of the industry standard. This is a brilliant joint effort result from all employees, Shepcon Rehabilitation Coordinator, Safety Reps, Company WSHO’s and Shepcon Clients.
Subcontractors
Shepcon has become a client of choice for our subcontractors. We have achieved this by maintaining ongoing relationships based on trust, good payment terms, safety and quality.
Community
Mental health remains a massive problem in our industry. It is something close to Shepcon Directors and we have decided to donate money again to Black Dog Institute charity in lieu of Christmas gifts. Founded in 2002, the Black Dog Institute is internationally recognised as a pioneer in the identification, prevention and treatment of mental illness, and the promotion of wellbeing.
