Overview:

The Norfolk Island Airport Runway Upgrade project involved the construction of two aircraft pavement concrete apron bays, totalling 1800m2 consisting of 150mm thick lean mix sub-base and 400mm thick flexural aircraft pavement. The project specification had onerous requirements for finished apron pavement level, slope and density typical of all aircraft pavement work. There were also a number of logistical challenges Kraftur® had to devise solutions for, due to the remote nature of the work (approximately 1,500km from Brisbane) and works having to be done with travel and quarantine restrictions during the COVID-19 epidemic.

Scope of works:

• Place, finish and cure lean mix sub base for apron pavement in formed lanes using vibrating truss screed.
• Place and finish aircraft pavement concrete according to Jacobs’ specification, using vibrating truss screed and bridge, while monitoring and maintaining optimal environmental conditions for concrete, as specified.
• Wet curing concrete for 24 hours as specified.
